INSTRUCTION

TASK 2A : KEY ARTWORK

For this assignment, we will be required to design a key artwork or simply a logo based on our initials, nickname, or pet name. We will need to investigate and determine our occupation in relation to our artistic output. For example: Music artist/ musician, they can collaborate and insert some music element to the logo.

I decided to make my nickname. "Gita"

Research

I personally wanted mine to represent myself as a designer. Where I create pretty things or you can call it art, for people to see. From that idea, I wanted to incorporate EYES to my key artwork. To build up my ideas, I searched for other peoples branding / logo.

Figure 1.2 The Jolly Co. (Week 6 05/10/2022)

Figure 1.3 Kuki  (Week 6 05/10/2022)

Each of the logo represents the brand well. How they transform the purpose of the brand and translate it into the shape of the brand logo? That is the question that is needed to be asked when doing this task.

Sketching

This is the first initial draft of the key artwork. I did a sketch on Ipad on how I wanted the design look like.

Digitization

Figure 1.5 Idea 1: G and A as eyes (Week 6 05/10/2022)

This design, I went with a more cute and animated logo. A more hand-drawn feeling to it. Although I kind of preferred this one but it maybe too cartoony and can look un-professional.

Figure 1.6 Idea 2: Using an existing typeface and tweaking it (Week 6 05/10/2022)

For this design, I used a font name, "Epilogue". But I changed the shape of G, I and A. The A looking like G but flipped to create the illusion of eyes. Changing the I shape  and add a terminal, then flips the T, making them facing each other. I want to make the essence of mouth/nose between the eyes (G and A).

After Mr. Vinod's feedback, I went with the second idea, which was the Figure 1.6. Idea 2. He did like the second design from Idea 2. Then I develop more from that idea into several designs. Although Mr. Vinod said that it weren't much different from the previous design.
Figure 1.7 Additional designs (Week 7 12/10/2022)

From these designs, I actually liked 2 of them, which are..

Figure 1.8 Design A: The i and t is not connected, squared end (Week 7 12/10/2022)
Figure 1.9 Design B: The i and t is connected, rounded end (Week 7 12/10/2022)

After showing this, Mr. Vinod mentioned that it is better to have the A and G similar. I did thought of that, but decided not to do that initially because I thought it would make the reader confuse. But after thinking about it, I think making the A and G the exact same shape but flipped, can add the uniqueness and elevation to the key artwork.

As for the i and t, I decided to make the end of the terminal to join. I can create the figure of a smiling mouth. As the whole idea of my logo is to create a face from my name.

Figure 1.10 Edited design (Week 7 12/10/2022)

After combining all of the feedbacks and my ideas. I came up with these new designs. The first 2 is more of a cartoony side with G and A as the eyes. But from this I liked the 3rd and last design.
Figure 1.11 Design C (Week 7 12/10/2022)

Figure 1.12 Design D (Week 7 12/10/2022)

I liked how rounded the G and A looked on the Design D. So I went with this one as my key artwork.

TASK 2B : COLLATERAL

The next task we need to do is collateral . Unlike task 2A, we would need to develop and improve our final artwork into a branding and post it on Instagram, which means we would need to highlight our own key artwork. We will also be required to create animation from our key artwork.

Research

First I did search some inspiration on what to put inside the Instagram page, besides the collaterals.
Maybe something eye related?
Figure 2.1 Drawing of eyes (Week 7 12/10/2022)

Figure 2.2 Types of irises (Week 7 12/10/2022)

After I saw some of the inspiration. I went with brown as my main color palette. Then I start to put together the designs and collaterals. I decided to make 3 by 3 , so in total I need to make 9.

First Try

Figure 2.11 Collateral 7 : My logo embossed to a paper (Week 8 19/10/2022)

Figure 2.12 Overall post format (Week 8 19/10/2022)

This was the first idea on the format. Some of the collateral that I made, I did not put it in cause I don't like the way it came out overall in the post format. But the design of the eyes does not suite well with my logo. Which I thought was still in theme which was EYES. But turns out the design should reflect on the whole Key artwork. So I re-did the designs.

Second Try

Figure 2.13 Design 1 (Week 9 26/10/2022)

Figure 2.14 Collateral 1: Store Logo (Week 9 26/10/2022)

Figure 2.15 Collateral 2: T-shirt (Week 9 26/10/2022)

Figure 2.20 Design 2 (Week 9 26/10/2022)

Figure 2.21 Design 3 (Week 9 26/10/2022)

After seeing some of my friends' work, I feel like my color pallete is a bit weak. No contrast at all. So I took the most brightest color I like, which is neon green. After that I re-did some of the collateral that I don't feel it would look nice overall. I tried to make each individual designs and collateral can blend well and create a harmonious relationship. I used brown, neon green and cream as the main colors. Design 1, which is a pattern. I took it from the logo,  i and t combined. Then Design 2 and 3 is the same. I took it from the logo, to make it feel like a launch of some kind of brand, I put coming soon on each of the design.

Figure 2.22 The Instagram Post (Week 9 26/10/2022)

For the animation, I looked up to several animation tutorials on YouTube. I decided to make my key artwork glowing. I use after effects to edit it.

FEEDBACK

Week 7:

General Feedback:
need to represent you
space is a square, doesn't mean we need to create it in a square manner,
symmetrical, simplistic, stable, communicable, when we see it and can understand better,
balance between the positive and negative space (in a form of square)making a strong enough unit
your mark must be unique n look like non other, but at the same time must be functional
memorable hand in hand with functional

Specific Feedback: construct the letters yourself, not from typeface and modify it, don't connect the t and i .. but the second one is good, the best one

Week 8: (ILW)

Week 9:
For the collateral post (IG post), the eye illustration can be changed to something that represents your Key Artwork.

REFLECTION

Experience
For this second task in Advanced typography, I got the handle of pushing myself to experiment more and explore. It is fun and quite challenging for me as we are given the freedom to create a whole new Key Artwork/logo of our name in any way we like. BUT, we still need to THINK what is this for, the idea and purpose behind the design. Every single thing needs to be thought out. The design choices are the result of my own thinking and reasoning.

So it was hard for me in the beginning as I am struggling to find design that carries that meaning. Mr. Vinod helped us to build that sense. Not just designing because it looks good or appealing to the eye, but also consider the meaning and idea behind it.

I feel like this class helped me improve as a designer!

Observations
I realized that there are lots of branding companies out there that also do other designs for example direction signage in buildings, Corporate design, Web design, etc. How Graphic design is the big scope of all of the other designs that there is. They learn how to draw, how to code, how to make a product, all all of the stuff related to designing.

Findings
I find that branding , especially self-branding will be important for my future career in the design world. Like Mr. Vinod's logo that he puts in every work, emails he have. Other designers also do the same. So this task certainly will help me in the future for this aspect of my career.
