Week 7 (Asset Creation)

Figure 1. Character design & UI Design

Following my idea for the game that I am planning. I needed to create some game assets in order to fulfill and suit the gameplay and story. To give calm, ethereal and also invoke imagination, I choose to do the art direction of this game to be sketch, black and white, unfinished style. Referencing from the inspiration of this game "A Winding Path".

Environments

Figure 2. Environment with character

The first environment would be in a grassland and prairie-like location. I design 4 different biomes, but in the middle of drawing an idea came into my mind and decided to create a bonus or extrra level which located in a house that is in the sky. Inspired by the well-known fairytale "Jack and the Beanstalk".

The next environment that I designed and drew is the forest/rainforest biome.

The next environment that I manage to draw is the underground tomb location.

These are several assets that I designed for the environment of the game.

Figure 10. Assets trees and plants

Lastly is the tundra biome that is the ending location, which is Pingyu's home. I decided to go with an igloo as his home to represent more the environment is located in a cold weather/icy place in tundra.

Other idea that came up to mind that in order for the players to know what to interact. I will add a color to indicate that they can interact with the object/environment.

FEEDBACK

REFLECTION

Creating game assets for "Pingyu Going Home" has been a bit of a rollercoaster. I thought deciding on a black-and-white, sketch-like style would make things easier, but I still feel all over the place. My drawing skills aren't the best, and I've ended up straying from my initial idea, which was inspired by a Winding Path game. I keep going back and forth on how I want the assets to look, and it’s been frustrating at times. But, even though it’s been confusing and sometimes disheartening, I’m learning a lot along the way. It’s a messy process, but I guess that’s part of what makes it interesting.
